From Personal Experience To Collective Wisdom

Mike began by recounting a critical lesson he learned early in his career. Leading a team in computer forensics, he set a bold $10 million revenue goal. Despite his enthusiasm, the announcement fell flat with his team. It was a turning point: he realized his mistake wasn’t in the ambition of the goal but in failing to align it with his team’s aspirations.

“Most leaders set corporate visions. Great leaders set collective visions.”

This pivotal moment underscored the importance of understanding what motivates team members—not just professionally but personally. By connecting organizational goals to individual dreams, leaders can inspire collective action and commitment.

Leadership In Action: A Tale Of Two Museums

Mike illustrated the power of great leadership with two contrasting stories from museums during the pandemic.

  • The Russian Approach: At the Boris Yeltsin Museum, a security guard, Alexander Vassiliev, was tasked with protecting a priceless artwork called Three Figures. Prohibited from engaging with the art or offering input, his role was monotonous and unengaging. Eventually, boredom led him to deface the very piece he was supposed to protect, resulting in a massive loss.
  • The Baltimore Museum of Art Approach: Conversely, in Baltimore, guards were asked for their insights. One guard, Michael York, leveraged his unique perspective to suggest curating an exhibit, Guarding the Art, which became the museum’s most successful event. This participatory approach increased engagement, attendance and donations, proving the value of inviting input from all levels of an organization.

The key takeaway? Good leaders tell their teams what to do; great leaders ask their teams what they could do.

Embracing The Shift: Leadership For The Future

Mike emphasized that the post-COVID era represents not just a change in how we work but a redefinition of what work means to people. Employees are no longer content to simply “clock in and clock out.” They want meaningful work, respect for their personal lives, and the freedom to contribute in ways that align with their strengths.

For leaders, this means rethinking their approach. By embracing flexibility, fostering trust and maintaining open communication, businesses can not only meet these demands but also cultivate a culture that attracts and retains high-performing teams. In the words of Mike Michalowicz, “Leadership today isn’t about making people fit into old molds; it’s about reshaping the mold to fit the people.”

This shift is a defining moment for organizations—and an opportunity for leaders to rise to the occasion. Those who adapt will find themselves leading stronger, more resilient teams in a post-pandemic world.

Building A Collective Vision

Mike’s closing message was a call to action for leaders to prioritize collaboration. To be truly effective, leaders must:

  1. Listen: Understand the goals and aspirations of their team members.
  2. Empower: Shift from directive to participatory leadership.
  3. Unite: Align personal and organizational visions to foster a shared mission.

Final Thoughts

Mike Michalowicz’s session was a masterclass in leadership evolution. By sharing his personal failures and global examples, he reminded us that great leadership is not about control but connection. Leaders who learn to ask instead of tell will inspire teams to achieve beyond expectations.
